An invitation to write
Contribute to a collective poem and two more opportunities to co-write this week
I’m writing this in the study of Charles Causley’s house in Launceston, it’s a real pinch me moment.
A moment that eight-year-old Lucy couldn’t have ever imagined, as she sat copying out poems and making little books. Trying to navigate her way through this world as a sensitive and often misunderstood little soul with stories that swirled and flapped around her head. Back then little Lucy was obssessed with poems, fairies and flowers, she was unencumbered by the weight of despair and still open to magic.
But here I am, experiencing actual magic in the house of one of my poetry and writer idols, returning to the dreams of an eight-year-old and trying to soak up and savour what a gift this is…
More about what I’ve been doing during my time here soon, in the meantime, I have two opportunities to share…
As part of my Residency at The Charles Causley Trust, I’m creating a collective poem, inspired by Charles Causley’s ‘I am the Song’
I invite you to contribute a line towards the poem, which I will then collate and share at the end of my residency.
Take a moment to read the poem below and see where your thoughts take you.
I can’t wait to see what you come up with...
I am the Song
I am the song that sings the bird.
I am the leaf that grows the land.
I am the tide that moves the moon.
I am the stream that halts the sand.
I am the cloud that drives the storm.
I am the earth that lights the sun.
I am the fire that strikes the stone.
I am the clay that shapes the hand.
I am the word that speaks the man.
Once you’re ready, please email me with your favourite line that you are happy to be included in the poem lucy@lucybeckley.com.
If you live locally, you can also pop into @blackcatbooks2024 or @launcestonlibrary to share your line and I will pick them up.
Thank you so much to everyone who joined me earlier today for co-writing, what a joy it was.
There are also TWO more opportunities to co-write with me this week.
Friday 13th March | 9:15 - 10:30
Sunday 15th March | 19:00 - 20:15
All sessions will take place online (UK time), please use this link.
Donations to the Charles Causley trust are very welcome (details on Lucy’s website).
Each session will involve a reading of Charles Causley’s poetry followed by a creative writing prompt set by me. We will then write together for an hour and come back together to share how we got on.
